- A Visit to Parliament Hill: The Heart of Ottawa

During my trip to Ottawa, I made sure to visit one of the most iconic landmarks in Canada: Parliament Hill. Located at 111 Wellington Street, Parliament Hill is the center of Canada’s government. As soon as I arrived, I was amazed by the grand architecture and the beauty of the surroundings. The hill itself stands 50 meters above the city, offering a stunning view of the Ottawa River and downtown Ottawa. It’s hard not to be impressed by the view from the top.
Parliament Hill is a place where history, politics, and culture come together. As I walked up to the site, I could feel the importance of the location. The towering buildings and lush grounds were a reminder that this was where many important decisions for the country are made.
The most striking feature of Parliament Hill is its Victorian Gothic architecture. The buildings are made of sandstone, and the pointed arches, intricate details, and tall spires create a very dramatic look. The central building, which houses the House of Commons and the Senate, is particularly impressive. The stonework is beautiful, with delicate carvings on every corner. As I stood in front of the main building, I felt like I was transported back to a time when such grand designs were the norm.
The tower, known as the Peace Tower, is one of the most iconic features of Parliament Hill. It stands tall above the other buildings, and I could see it from almost everywhere on the hill. The tower symbolizes Canada’s peace and unity. It was built after the First World War and has become a symbol of the country’s resilience.
As I walked around the grounds, I couldn’t help but admire the careful design of the entire complex. The buildings are not only impressive in size but also in their beauty. The details on the facades, the grand windows, and the carefully manicured gardens make Parliament Hill a place worth visiting.
One of the highlights of my visit was the Parliament Library, located behind the main Parliament buildings. This part of Parliament Hill is often overlooked by visitors, but I think it’s one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the entire site.
The library is a circular building, and it’s known for its unique and stunning design. The stone walls are covered in intricate carvings, and the ceiling features beautiful wooden beams. The interior of the library feels cozy and inviting, even though it is quite large. There are thousands of books inside, and I couldn’t help but admire the vast collection of Canadian history and culture.
One of the things that impressed me the most about the library was the quiet atmosphere. Even though Parliament Hill is often busy with tourists and politicians, the library feels like a peaceful retreat. It’s a perfect place to stop and learn more about Canada’s history.

While I was at Parliament Hill, I also had the chance to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony. This event takes place every morning during the summer months and is a popular attraction for visitors. I arrived early to get a good spot, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The ceremony is a colorful and dramatic display of Canadian tradition. The guards, dressed in bright red uniforms and tall black hats, march with precision and order. The band plays lively music, and the crowd watches in awe. I could feel the energy of the ceremony as it unfolded. The guards move in perfect synchronization, and the entire event is a testament to Canada’s commitment to tradition and ceremony.
Watching the Changing of the Guard was one of the most memorable moments of my visit. It was a chance to experience the history and culture of Canada in a very direct way.
After exploring the Parliament buildings and the library, I decided to take a walk to the top of the hill. From here, the view of the Ottawa River and the city below is breathtaking. I could see the entire downtown area, with its streets, buildings, and parks. The river stretched out in front of me, its waters sparkling in the sunlight. The Peace Tower and other buildings on Parliament Hill looked even more impressive from this vantage point.
The view was one of the best parts of my visit. It was peaceful up on the hill, and I took a moment to just enjoy the scenery. The layout of the city below, with its wide streets and green spaces, looked very charming. I could even see the Rideau Canal in the distance, another famous landmark in Ottawa.
The area around Parliament Hill is just as interesting as the hill itself. The lawns are well-kept, and there are sculptures and monuments scattered around the grounds. I spent some time walking around the park-like area, taking in the sculptures and reading the plaques that explained their significance. The atmosphere was peaceful, and it was easy to feel connected to Canada’s history in such a meaningful way.

While I didn’t get a chance to see a session in person, I found it fascinating to think about all the important decisions that are made here.

I was lucky enough to join a guided tour, where I learned about the history of Parliament Hill and the role of the government in Canada. The tour also included a visit to the House of Commons and the Senate, where I could see the chambers where Canadian laws are made. It was amazing to see these places up close and to learn about the work that takes place inside these walls.
Visiting Parliament Hill was one of the highlights of my time in Ottawa. The history, architecture, and views were all incredible. From the gothic beauty of the buildings to the peacefulness of the library and the changing of the guard, there was so much to see and experience.
