On my recent trip to Montreal, one of the most impressive sites I visited was the Montreal Olympic Stadium. Built for the 1976 Summer Olympics, this stadium is not just a sports venue; it’s a remarkable piece of architectural history. With a capacity of 56,040 people, it’s one of the largest sports stadiums in Canada and has a rich history tied to Montreal’s sports culture.
The design of the Montreal Olympic Stadium is truly one-of-a-kind. Created by French architect Roger Taillibert, the stadium has been recognized as one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world. The design concept is meant to resemble a ship sailing, with its iconic mast-like structure reaching high into the sky. This structure is not only visually stunning but also quite complicated and expensive to build. The challenge of constructing the slanted tower and its massive size contributed to the project’s lengthy timeline and high cost.
What struck me most when I first saw the stadium was its sheer size and the boldness of its design. The stadium is elliptical in shape, supported by 34 large steel and concrete columns. The entire structure is built with prefabricated components that are installed on these columns. One of the stadium’s standout features is its towering observation deck. Standing at 175 meters, the tower is the tallest inclined building in the world. I couldn’t help but marvel at the view from the top. When I reached the observation deck, I could see the entire city of Montreal stretched out below me, with the St. Lawrence River winding its way through the landscape. The panoramic view from up there was absolutely breathtaking.

These giant scoreboards make it easy to follow the action no matter where you are sitting in the stadium. From any angle, I could clearly see the score of the game, which added to the excitement of the atmosphere.
The stadium is not just for watching sports; it also houses a variety of facilities that make it a hub for different events. Underneath the stands, there are six levels of spaces for various uses. These include rooms for meetings, conferences, and exhibitions. There’s even a sports museum located within the stadium. I took some time to explore the museum and was fascinated by the history of sports in Montreal, as well as the legacy of the Olympic Games.
Another feature that stood out to me was the stadium’s elegant design. The surfaces of the building are adorned with brown-tinted glass, giving it a sleek and shiny appearance. The glass panels make the stadium sparkle, especially when the sun hits them just right. The overall look of the stadium is both modern and majestic, which makes it an impressive landmark in Montreal’s landscape.
The Montreal Olympic Stadium has also hosted many important events since its opening, including the Summer Olympics, baseball games, concerts, and even the Montreal Expos baseball team’s home games. Although the Expos have since moved to Washington, D.C., the stadium still holds a special place in the hearts of Montreal sports fans. It continues to be a symbol of Montreal’s vibrant sports culture and its connection to the world’s biggest sporting events.
