- The Majestic Qaitbay Citadel: A Historical Landmark in Alexandria
- Aug,24,2025
I was excited when I heard I would visit the Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria. I had heard about this ancient fortress before, and I was curious to see it for myself. As soon as I arrived in Alexandria, I could feel the rich history of the place. The city was filled with stories from the past, and I could not wait to experience it.
The Qaitbay Citadel stands right by the sea. I could see it from far away as I walked toward it. The castle was big, and it looked strong, like it had been guarding the sea for many years. When I reached the entrance, I could see how old the walls were. They had stood through many storms and wars. I felt like I was about to step into another time, a time long ago.
When I entered the Citadel, I noticed how quiet it was. The only sounds I could hear were the waves crashing against the rocks and the wind blowing. The place felt peaceful but also powerful. The thick stone walls made me feel safe, like I was protected. I could see the sea on one side and the city on the other. From up here, everything looked so small, and I could imagine how important this place was for the people who lived here long ago.

I walked around the outside of the Citadel first. The walls were tall and strong, made of stone. The walls were not perfect; some parts had cracks and wear. But they still looked strong and proud. There were small windows and openings in the walls. I guessed they were used to watch for enemies coming from the sea. I stood near one of the windows and looked out at the water. I could see the waves moving smoothly, and I thought about how long this place had been standing here, looking over the sea.
I went through the main gate next. It was a large wooden door, and it seemed very heavy. I could imagine how soldiers would have used this gate to protect the castle from invaders. The gate opened with a creak, and I entered a large space. Inside, I saw more walls and towers. The path was narrow, and there were stairs leading up to higher parts of the fortress. The steps were made of stone, and they felt solid under my feet.

I decided to climb to the top of the Citadel. It was a little tiring, but the view from the top was worth it. The higher I went, the more I could see of Alexandria and the sea. When I reached the top, I stopped for a moment to look around. The view was amazing. I could see the blue sea stretching out far into the horizon. The city of Alexandria was spread out below me. I could see the old buildings, the streets, and the busy people. It felt like I was on top of the world.
After enjoying the view, I explored the towers and walls of the Citadel. Some parts of the towers were open, so I could walk around them. I could see more of the sea from different angles. The towers had small rooms inside them, and I wondered what they were used for in the past. Maybe they were storage rooms or places for soldiers to rest. The walls were thick, and it was clear that they were built to protect the people inside.
As I walked around, I tried to imagine what the Citadel was like many years ago. I could tell it had been a very important place for the people of Alexandria. It was built in the 15th century, during a time when Egypt was often attacked by enemies. The Citadel was made to protect the city from those attacks. It was built by the Sultan Qaitbay, and it was used as a defense against pirates and other threats from the sea. The castle had seen many battles and changes throughout its history, and now it was a peaceful place to visit and learn about the past.

One of the things I liked the most about the Citadel was the view of the sea. Standing near the edge of the walls, I could see the water stretching out forever. The sea was calm that day, and the sun was shining on the surface of the water. It looked like a big blue carpet, and I felt like I was looking at the same sea that people had seen hundreds of years ago. The view was peaceful, but I could also imagine how fierce the sea could be during a storm. The people who built the Citadel had to be strong and brave to live in a place like this.
As I walked through the Citadel, I thought more about why it had been built. The Citadel was important because it protected the people of Alexandria. It stood strong against attacks from the sea, and it kept the city safe. The soldiers who lived in the Citadel must have been very skilled and brave. They had to be ready at any moment to defend the city from threats. I could see how much work went into building such a strong fortress. Every wall, every tower, and every stone had a purpose.

Even though the Citadel was built for defense and protection, it was very calm inside. The thick stone walls kept the noise of the city out. Inside, I could hear only my footsteps and the sounds of nature. It was easy to imagine what life was like for the soldiers who lived there. They would have spent their days walking the walls, watching the sea, and staying alert. But there were also quiet moments, when the only sound was the wind blowing through the towers.
Inside the Citadel, there was a small museum. I took some time to visit it and learn more about the history of the fortress. The museum had old weapons, tools, and pictures showing what life had been like here in the past. There were also maps showing how the fortress had changed over time. I learned that the Citadel had been built on the site of an ancient lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. That made the Citadel even more special, as it was built where something so important once stood.
I walked through the courtyards of the Citadel. The courtyards were open spaces where soldiers and visitors could walk. Some of the courtyards had gardens with flowers and plants. I could imagine how beautiful they must have looked during the spring and summer months. The stone walls around the courtyards were covered in moss and plants. It was nice to see how nature had mixed with the ancient stone. The courtyards were peaceful, and I spent some time just sitting and enjoying the calm atmosphere.
