The Beautiful and Compact Basel Zoo

When I first arrived at Basel Zoo, I didn’t know what to expect. The zoo is located right in the city, and although it’s not as large as the Zurich Zoo, it’s well-designed and has a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The zoo is often referred to as "Zooli" by locals to distinguish it from the Zurich Zoo, and it truly lives up to its reputation as a small but complete animal park.

I went there last week with my kid, and despite the hot weather, we were able to enjoy our visit without feeling completely drained by the sun. The zoo is full of shady spots from tall trees, so the temperature was much more comfortable than I imagined. Walking through the zoo felt like strolling through a small park, with beautiful greenery everywhere. It was a perfect blend of nature and wildlife.

Exploring the Animal Exhibits

Although the zoo isn’t as big as some others, the animal exhibits are thoughtfully arranged. The layout is compact, but it’s packed with a variety of animals, including some big favorites like giraffes, elephants, kangaroos, and Indian rhinoceroses. Each area was carefully designed so visitors could view the animals clearly while giving them enough space and privacy.

One of the things I really appreciated was the animal welfare approach the zoo follows. It’s clear that they take the well-being of the animals seriously. For example, on hot days, the rhino mother and baby enjoy fruit ice to cool off. I watched them happily munching on the frozen treats. The zoo also takes special care to group animals with similar temperaments or those that don’t pose a threat to each other. This creates a more natural and stimulating environment for the animals.

A Memorable Moment in the Chimpanzee House

While we were walking around, I came across the chimpanzee exhibit, and it was one of the most exciting parts of my visit. There was a pair of newborn twin chimpanzees! They were incredibly active, mimicking the actions of the adult chimps and their mothers. I spent over ten minutes just watching them interact with their environment, pulling fruits out of the enrichment boxes and playing with each other. It was delightful to see how naturally curious and playful they were.

These baby chimps reminded me of how intelligent and similar animals are to us. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched them learning from their surroundings. It was a small, yet beautiful moment, and I was glad I got to see it.

Meeting the Baby Rhinos and Hippos

Another part of the zoo that really stood out to me was the area with the baby rhinos and hippos. They were absolutely adorable! The rhino calf was so small and waddled around in the most endearing way. The hippo baby was equally cute, moving slowly in the water. Kids in the area were laughing and pointing at them. These moments of joy were perfect for families and little ones to enjoy together.

Interactive Experiences with the Kangaroos

The kangaroo exhibit was another highlight of the day. We were lucky enough to see a zookeeper interacting with the kangaroos. At first, I was startled by one particularly muscular male kangaroo, but it was fascinating to see the keeper interact so closely with the animals. The kangaroos were calm and seemed used to the attention. The zookeeper explained a lot about their behavior and habits, which added a personal touch to the experience.

I’d never realized how strong and agile kangaroos are up close. Watching them hop around and interact with the keeper left me with a deeper respect for these animals. It was a great example of how well the zoo staff knows and cares for the animals.

The Fun Seal Area and Aquarium

One of the other fun places we visited was the seal area. While we didn’t manage to see the feeding show, we enjoyed watching the seals swim around in their pool. The water seemed like their playground, and they glided through it so gracefully. It was easy to spend time there, just watching them interact with each other.

The aquarium also deserves a mention. It had a great variety of fish and aquatic life, and a lot of the species had access to both indoor and outdoor spaces. The best part was seeing the penguins underwater. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them hunting for food. They were quick and agile, darting around the tanks with ease. The colors of the fish and the peaceful flow of the water added to the calm atmosphere of the aquarium.

Surprises Around Every Corner

What really made my visit special was how every corner of the zoo seemed to offer something new and exciting. Even though the zoo is small, it’s packed with thoughtful details. I was amazed at how much the staff had managed to pack into such a compact area. The design of the zoo makes it feel spacious, and there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the animals without feeling crowded.

Walking through Basel Zoo, I realized that it’s not the size of the zoo that matters, but the quality of the experience. The zoo focuses on creating environments that are both enriching for the animals and enjoyable for visitors. Whether it was watching the baby animals play or learning about conservation efforts, there was always something interesting to see.

The zoo was a perfect day trip, especially for families. It’s easy to walk through and see all the animals, and the small size makes it manageable for kids and adults alike. The whole experience was full of wonder, and I left feeling impressed by how much care and thought had been put into making the zoo a happy place for both animals and visitors.
